LifeStraw

Have you guys ever herd of LifeStraw? Looks interesting but I don't know if I would like something like that for backpacking.

  1. Hi Jim,

We're the wholesale distributor of the LifeStraw, so I wanted to let you know you can use us as a resource. If you'd like to try one for yourself, give me a call and we'll ship you one for free (888) 451-6752.

I wrote an article based on my experience hiking with it: http://eartheasy.com/blog/2011/09/a-backpackers-review-of-the-lifestraw-personal-water-filter/

There's some tips there that might be of use.

I think you'll find that when you're backpacking you will dip your bottle in the creek, then sip it through the straw. I did drink directly from creeks, but it's easiest to scoop the bottle in first. Although I did drink from some super shallow mud puddles which weren't deep enough to scoop the bottle in.

First time using it, and when the filter's sat dry for a month, it requires decent amount of suction to get it flowing. Then it's easy to drink through. If it stops flowing, then blow back to clear the filter. When you're finished, blow back to empty the water, recap, and that's it.

    Hope that helps!
    Thanks,
    Ben
